Description

This module is intended to broaden and deepen the knowledge, understanding and skills of students covering a diverse range of technical subjects that support an organisation’s core activities, including those related to the essential features of a sustainable organisation. The module will enhance the students’ analytical and decision-making skills, particularly in the context of sustainable development.

Aims

The aim of this Module is to provide an understanding of the complex nature of decisions that influence the sustainability of projects and strategies and to enable students to select, develop and apply appropriate tools to support sustainability enhancement in an organisation's decision-making processes.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate the complexity of decisions involving sustainability and the challenges of assessing the social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainability.
  2. Appraise the underlying principles and limitations of practical decision support tools such as economic evaluation, cost-benefit analysis and multi-criteria analysis.
  3. Select, develop and apply appropriate tools to support a decision that involves sustainability in a case study project.

Indicative Content

1 Decision making processes

Overview of decision-making involving sustainability - sustainability definitions, stakeholder engagement, social, economic and environmental aspects.

2 Economic Evaluation

Identification of costs and income, Whole life costing.

3 Economic Evaluation

Investment appraisal, risk analysis.

4 Cost-Benefit Analysis

CBA Processes and examples.

5 Cost-Benefit Analysis

Benefit Evaluation and interpretation of CBA results

6 Multi Criteria Decision Analysis

MCDA processes and examples, ranking and scoring and aggregation in the assessment of options.

7 Application of Decision support Tools

Selection and implementation of appropriate decision support tools.

Guidance Notes

SCQF Level - The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.

Credit Value – The total value of SCQF credits for the module. 20 credits are the equivalent of 10 ECTS credits. A full-time student should normally register for 60 SCQF credits per semester.
