Description

This module is your opportunity to shape the project you will undertake in the capstone module: MBA555 Management Investigation. You will have learned in the business research methods module different approaches to undertaking a research project and these will help guide you in your formation of a suitable proposal for the management investigation, which follows this module.

Aims

The aim of this Module is to provide the student with: an opportunity to explore a potential project for MBA555 and to outline a detailed proposal which should lead to successful completion of the project module.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

  1. Create a suitable project plan and secure necessary permissions
  2. Produce an effective project proposal for either a consultancy or theoretical project
  3. Identify how you will critically analyse and interpret primary/secondary research data (quantitative and/ or qualitative), testing for validity and reliability of the results within your project

Indicative Content

1 Choosing a project type

Deciding on undertaking a consultancy project for an organisation of your choice or theoretical research for a more traditional dissertation style report.

2 Identifying your subject for research

What constitutes a suitable business problem for either practical or theoretical research. Examination of examples of suitable projects. What makes a 'good' project of each type. Ethical considerations. Unlike the business research methods module (MBA514), in this module you will be expected to undertake this task rather than examining the theory around how to do this (as per MBA514)

3 Planning your research

Breaking up your research project into suitable phases of investigation, analysis and reporting. Creating a schedule for research work.

4 Identifying suitable evidence

Identifying where you can find literature that aid identification of best practice knowledge in your research area. Securing permissions for a practice based consultancy report. You should also use your knowledge of research methodologies from MBA514 to identify the most suitable approach to primary and/or secondary data collection and analysis.

5 Reporting

Expectations of a consultancy or research style report. Making clear what you will do in your project and why it is relevant for an MBA and, if you are on a pathway, how it fits within that cognate area.

6 Understanding limitations

Identifying limitations of your planned research by reflecting on the limitations of your research design.
