Description

The module supports the development of an effective entrepreneurial, innovative, and leadership mindsets. It will provide you with an opportunity to explore contemporary theories, essential principles of entrepreneurship, and innovative organisational environment in a variety of contexts . Students will explore the required entrepreneurial knowledge, skills, and attributes for success.

Aims

Generating new ideas that create value is the core of entrepreneurship and ideation is the core of new ideas. The aim of this module is to teach an ideation system that uses problem recognition and uses concepts of deliberate practice and repetition that enable MBA candidates to generate high potential ideas.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

  1. Critically appraise global complex business problems using an ideation system to generate high potential solutions.
  2. Analyse, synthesise and solve multifaceted, unfamiliar business problems by seeking out sources of change.
  3. Critically evaluate the different Innovation types and the relationship between creativity and innovation frameworks, exploring specific frameworks such as design thinking that support the creative process of idea generation.

Indicative Content

1 Creativity, creation and innovation

Develop understanding of the theories behind creativity and innovation and their applications. Creative v logical thinking. Characteristics of creativity. Barriers to creativity. The creative process. Sources of commercial ideas. Techniques to aid creativity. Innovation and change concepts and models. Schumpeter's gale of creative destruction. Drivers of innovation. Lateral thinking techniques. The learning organisation. Strategies for Innovation, Innovation networks, collaborative structures.

2 Global business problems

The competitive environment. Globalisation. Drivers of Globalisation. Innovation and Globalisation. Wicked business problems. Distinguish between high and low quality problems. Actively search for ideas in problem rich environments.

3 Innovation

From Plan to Product. Innovation Strategy and Leadership. Creating and sustaining a Innovation culture.

4 Ideation system and Ideate methodology

Select and apply IDEATE methodology in order to add innovation and uniqueness to new and existing opportunities. Add innovation and uniqueness to new and existing opportunities. Use sources of change to anticipate new opportunities. Practice scoring, selecting and defending high quality ideas.

SCQF Level - The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.

Credit Value – The total value of SCQF credits for the module. 20 credits are the equivalent of 10 ECTS credits. A full-time student should normally register for 60 SCQF credits per semester.
