Description

This module provides an in-depth understanding of the theoretical underpinnings and the practical implications of international approaches, models and regulations of managing people in a global context. Through this module you will examine the different models of international human resource management, the major employment policies of multinational companies and the problems that arise when operating in different countries.

Aims

The aim of this module is to provide the student with an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings and the practical implications of international approaches to human resource management.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate the theoretical frameworks for international human resource management
  2. Critically evaluate the different approaches to international HRM
  3. Critically analyse and assess the employment policies of multinational companies and the challenges that may arise when operating in different countries

Indicative Content

1 Cross-cultural management

Understanding culture and its impact on HRM, understanding institutions and their impact on HRM, understanding and evaluating contemporary challenges linked with managing people across borders.

2 International human resource management

Understanding international recruitment, selection, training, development, performance and rewards management, as well as employment relations.

Guidance Notes

SCQF Level - The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.

Credit Value – The total value of SCQF credits for the module. 20 credits are the equivalent of 10 ECTS credits. A full-time student should normally register for 60 SCQF credits per semester.
