Description

The purpose of this module is to introduce fundamental computer science concepts including problem decomposition, algorithm development, and engineering solutions.

Aims

The aim of this module is to provide the student with a basic understanding of programming concepts and problem solving through simple application development.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an ability to understand basic computing concepts.
  2. Demonstrate an ability to solve simple problems through software design.
  3. Demonstrate an ability to understand software development for different platforms.

Indicative Content

1 Programming Fundamentals

An introduction covering the basic principles of programming and software design. Will include coverage of the terminology and implementation of fundamental programming components such as events, functions and variables.

2 Computer Platforms

Understanding the specific strengths and limitations of various computer platforms and technologies.

3 Applications and Cloud Software

Databases, spreadsheets and cloud software.

4 Historical aspects of computing and issues.

Background, social issues, security and privacy.

Guidance Notes

SCQF Level - The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.

Credit Value – The total value of SCQF credits for the module. 20 credits are the equivalent of 10 ECTS credits. A full-time student should normally register for 60 SCQF credits per semester.
