Description
This module provides students with an introduction to the structure and normal function of the human body.
This module will help students develop Intellectual and Personal Abertay Attributes. In particular:
- Be determined, ambitious, articulate, adaptable, self-reflective, resilient, and practical.
- Master their subject and recognise how what has been learned can be applied.
Aims
The aim of this module is to provide the student with: a sound biological underpinning for sport and health studies.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to:
- Describe the organisation of the human body.
- Describe function of the major body systems.
- Describe the basic structure and function of the human cell and body tissues.
- Describe the relationship between biology and health.
- Understand simple biological measurements.
Indicative Content
1 Organisation of the human body
Biological hierarchy e.g. System, organ, tissue, cell, common anatomical terms; relative positions of body parts, planes and sections; and general body regions.
2 Body systems
Cardiovascular, respiratory , nervous, immune, endocrine, digestive, urinary, reproductive, integumentary, musulo-skeletal.
3 Cells and tissues
Structure and function of cells and tissues.
4 Relationship between biology and health
Definitions of health. Biology as a determinant of health. Relationship between social, economic and psychological factors and health.
5 Simple biological measurements
Measurement and documentation of radialpulse, respiratory rate, PEFR, temperature. Comparison against norm values.

Guidance Notes
SCQF Level - The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.
Credit Value – The total value of SCQF credits for the module. 20 credits are the equivalent of 10 ECTS credits. A full-time student should normally register for 60 SCQF credits per semester.
