This module will help students develop Intellectual and Personal Abertay Attributes. In particular:

  • Be determined, ambitious, articulate, adaptable, self-reflective, resilient, and practical.
  • Master their subject and recognise how what has been learned can be applied.

Aims

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

  1. Describe the organisation of the human body.
  2. Describe function of the major body systems.
  3. Describe the basic structure and function of the human cell and body tissues.
  4. Describe the relationship between biology and health.
  5. Understand simple biological measurements.

Indicative Content

1 Organisation of the human body

Biological hierarchy e.g. System, organ, tissue, cell, common anatomical terms; relative positions of body parts, planes and sections; and general body regions.

2 Body systems

Cardiovascular, respiratory , nervous, immune, endocrine, digestive, urinary, reproductive, integumentary, musulo-skeletal.

3 Cells and tissues

Structure and function of cells and tissues.

4 Relationship between biology and health

Definitions of health. Biology as a determinant of health. Relationship between social, economic and psychological factors and health.

5 Simple biological measurements

Guidance Notes

SCQF Level - The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.

Credit Value – The total value of SCQF credits for the module. 20 credits are the equivalent of 10 ECTS credits. A full-time student should normally register for 60 SCQF credits per semester.
