Description

During the Industrial/ Research placement students will be expected to manage and complete a substantive research project with minimal direct supervision. It is designed to allow the students to accept responsibility for their own personal and professional development, learning & training

Aims

The aim of this Module is to provide the student with: a structured project in an Industrial and/or research laboratory under the guidance of designated internal and/or external supervisors to provide them with an opportunity to develop their skills as researchers.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

1.  Critically evaluate the literature in the chosen area of research.

2.  Design and implement a research plan in the chosen area of research.

3.  Evaluate and select appropriate methods to be applied to the selected area of research

4.  Critically evaluate the results obtained in the chosen area of research and present these results in appropriate formats

5.  Communicate findings through a range of media for a variety of audiences.

Indicative Content

1 Placement (Structure)

Students obtain a placement in either an industrial or academic setting under the supervision of a placement (academic (in house placements) or industrial (outside placements) supervisor and an academic supervisors. The student is responsible for securing the placement with the support of the programme team and the professional support services. The division of science will offer a number of placements.

2 Placement (Management

In addition to regular supervision at the placement setting by the placement supervisor the student will also remain in close contact with a designated academic member of staff and will be visited at least once during their placement by the designated member of staff.

3 Placement (Debriefing

At the end of the placement students will be given a debriefing which will enable them to transfer their learning experience back into the university-based setting and for consideration for future learning.

4 Placement based project

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Students will carry out a research project while on placement. The project work should be closely related to the needs of the placement setting. The student will have a supervisor based at the placement setting and any student carrying out placements externally to Abertay will have a designated member of staff as a contact point at Abertay. The project element will normally last for 10 weeks. The module will normally run concurrently with SCN502. Students are assessed by production of a dissertation and presentation of a seminar and poster.

Guidance notes

Credit Value – The total value of SCQF credits for the module. 20 credits are the equivalent of 10 ECTS credits. A full-time student should normally register for 60 SCQF credits per semester.
