This module builds on practitioners existing knowledge, skills and experience of mental health crisis intervention and resolution.
The aim of this Module is to provide the student with :the theory and practice of mental health crisis intervention and explore how this can be integrated into contemporary practice.
By the end of this module the student should be able to:
1. Critically examine policy, research and theories related to mental health crisis intervention and resolution.
2. Understand and evaluate the principles of crisis intervention and how to apply these when working with people experiencing mental health crisis.
3. Critically analyse and use therapeutic approaches when offering crisis intervention.
1 Crisis and risk theories applied to mental health
Key theories of crisis and risk; theoretical underpinnings of crisis intervention and resolution. Characteristics of crisis; positive dimensions associated with a crisis experience; policy; research; the development of crisis resolution and home treatment teams.
2 Core principles of crisis intervention and resolution
Insights of crisis theory to guide practice; principles of crisis and risk assessment; a balanced approach; crisis assessment skills; reflection; reinforcing coping skills within a psychological and social framework; formulation of clear plans for intervention and pitfalls of practice.
3 Therapeutic approaches to crisis intervention and resolution
Frameworks for helping people cope positively with crisis; appraisal of resources and helping methods available; solution focused approaches; cognitive behavioral approaches; person centred; self- management.
Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
This course will be delivered utilising a blended learning approach offering a flexible learning opportunity through a variety of student centred teaching methods. These include online tutorials, webinars, articulate storyline software and interactive activities through the online blackboard. This module will include 2 study days which will support introduction to the topic, their learning community, skills required for online learning and relevant skills based learning. All teaching strategies will encourage participation to enable integration and application of general theoretical principles into practice. Participation in discussion through online discussion forums is significant to enable sharing of ideas, reflection on previous experience and to develop problem solving skills. Private study is also an important element of the programme which enables the student to be fully responsible for achieving their learning needs. Reading / study material will guide learning via our online blackboard. A library session will familiarise students with the Abertay library and online journal search facilities. Structured Feedback will take place in week 7. Reflection and analysis of individual progress will be supported through Blackboard by access to resources and the online forums. Students will be expected to spend time this week drafting an outline of their assignment for comments by the module leader and planning their study activity for the remaining 7 weeks.

Credit Value – The total value of SCQF credits for the module. 20 credits are the equivalent of 10 ECTS credits. A full-time student should normally register for 60 SCQF credits per semester.
