This is the final practice maudlin the programme. By the of the module the student should be practising at the level expected of a newly qualified registrant.
The aim of this Module is to provide the student with opportunities to consolidate learning to date by developing areas of strength and through addressing areas for development.
By the end of this module the student should be able to:
1. Apply knowledge and principles of mental health nursing to demonstrate the ability to practice confidently to ensure patient safety
2. Apply knowledge and principles of mental health nursing and therapeutic interventions to provide effective care at the standard required of a registrant
3. Demonstrate the development of interpersonal skills required to work collaboratively with patients, negotiating boundaries and areas of conflict
4. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of legislative frameworks that affect mental health care, and the ability to apply these whilst retaining patient dignity
5. Demonstrate the ability to organise and manage self and other team members displaying leadership and mentoring qualities where appropriate
6. Demonstrate the ability to identify strengths and learning needs, developing plans to build on strengths or improve on areas of need through reflection and clinical supervision
1 Patient safety

7 Clinical skills
Moving and handling, fire safety, basic life support, medication administration including injection techniques, the administration of controlled drugs, emergency tranquillisation, drug calculations, assessment and management of wounds, managing anaphylaxis and seizure. Infection control. Managing personal safety. Handover, ward rounds and team meetings. Shift planning and effective use of resources. Mental health observations
Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
The majority of learning in this module takes place in the practice learning environment. Here the student learns through a mentoring relationship with qualified staff, and the ability to develop their mental health nursing practice under supervision. At this level of study, the student is expected to work with confidence and a level of autonomy commensurate with their level of competence as judged by the mentor/supporting clinical staff. Theoretical underpinning of practice is developed in the theoretical modules throughout the programme, and the links between theory and practice are made explicit during the module. In the University, nursing skills are taught using simulated and skills based teaching involving groupwork, role play, and learning through modelling of practical skills.

Credit Value – The total value of SCQF credits for the module. 20 credits are the equivalent of 10 ECTS credits. A full-time student should normally register for 60 SCQF credits per semester.
