To provide students with an enhanced understanding evidence based practice.
The aim of this module is to provide the student with the opportunity to further develop the skills required to utilise evidence in the clinical practice environment.
By the end of this module the student should be able to:
1. Utilise an evidence based approach to the delivery and development of health care for a range of client groups.
2. Critically appraise different types of evidence and the value and utility of different approaches to generating evidence.
3. Critically analyse strategies to promote and develop best practice in the clinical setting.

1 Evidence based practice
The context of EBO and the practice environment: formulating answerable questions using PICO, utilizing a hierarchy of evidence, filtering evidence, practising evidence based health care, utilising clinical audit to inform practice, systematic reviews of the literature. Understanding the peer review process. Advanced searching skills
2 Appraising evidence
Critical appraisal skills for qualitative and quantitative research . Making sense of literature reviews. Drawing conclusions based on evidence.Drawing on evidence to support change and development and to enhance professional and academic practice
3 Promoting and developing practice
Promoting an evidence based culture, decision making in practice, dissemination of research and its influence on practice, working in a multidisciplinary environment to develop practice, utilizing an empowerment approach to care planning and practice development
4 Quality improvement
Understanding the quality agenda. Approaches to quality improvement and its evaluation.
Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
There is a mix of lectures and tutorials. The lectures provide background knowledge and a theoretical framework for the module. The tutorials enable the student to engage in enquiry based learning activities which focus on the development of skills to identify and critically analyse evidence and promote evidence based practice. Assessment of the learning outcomes is achieved via a literature review of a health related topic. Additional supportive reading is provided by the module tutor.

Credit Value – The total value of SCQF credits for the module. 20 credits are the equivalent of 10 ECTS credits. A full-time student should normally register for 60 SCQF credits per semester.
