Public Health


This module explores some of the key issues in the field of public health.


The aim of this module is to provide the student with an understanding of public health and policy, an awareness of public health priorities in Scotland and an understanding of approaches to addressing these.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

1.  Demonstrate an understanding of public health and public health policy in Scotland

2.  Discuss public health priorities

3.  Discuss strategies for improving public health

4.  Examine strategies for dealing with key public health issues

5.  Examine the factors that influence public health policy, strategy and the delivery of care

Indicative Content

1 Public health

Defining public health. Determinants of health, inequalities and health. The health of the population of Scotland. Health and ill-health, social and material deprivation, community development approaches to health and well-being.

2 Theoretical concepts and public health

Population based community health promotion and illness prevention initiatives.

3 Health policy

Contemporary Scottish health care policies and the historical emergence of policy. Health targets.

4 Key issues in public health

For example, child protection, suicide and self-injury prevention, obesity , addiction, smoking cessation. Alcohol misuse. Working with an ageing population. Promoting population health. Exploring health inequality in vulnerable groups.

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment

All sessions take the form of a lectorial unless otherwise indicated - short formal presentations on the subject by the lecturer either online or in the classroom are linked closely to work in small groups - this combination provides students with the opportunity to explore their learning with others in their allocated groups.

Credit Value – The total value of SCQF credits for the module. 20 credits are the equivalent of 10 ECTS credits. A full-time student should normally register for 60 SCQF credits per semester.
