Description

This module provides an overview of the principles and methods of cognitive−behavioural therapy.

Aims

The aim of this Module is to provide the student with : an opportunity to develop an understanding of cognitive−behavioural therapy, and to explore the ethical, professional and personal issues arising from the application of CBT theory and methods in practice.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

1.  Critically discuss the theoretical underpinnings of cognitive−behavioural therapy

2.   Evaluate assessment data relevant to a CBT approach to therapy

3.  Formulate a CBT response to client problems

4.  Critically reflect upon and amend practice in response to emerging issues in the therapeutic encounter

5.  Demonstrate competence in the delivery of core CBT skills

Indicative Content

1 Theoretical perspectives in CBT

History and current developments in CBT. CBT approaches to psychological distress: basic theoretical concepts. Integrating CBT with other therapy approaches: issues, challenges and opportunities. The role of research in effective use of CBT approaches.

2 Principles of CBT practice

The CBT competency framework. Core CBT skills: assessment, treatment planning and case formulation, developing a collaborative relationship, implementing behavioural and cognitive change strategies, using homework assignments with clients, using self− help materials, monitoring client progress, relapse prevention strategies. The process of therapy: common issues and challenges. Professional practice issues and supervision in CBT.

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment

The module is delivered via lecture and group work. Practical sessions are designed to help the student develop their skills. Use of simulation and video provides an opportunity for further skills development. The modules promotes the graduate attributes of flexibility and creativity.
