Description

This module introduces the student to the practice of motivational interviewing (MI) in the context of health behaviour change.

Aims

The aim of this Module is to provide the student with :skills and knowledge to practice motivational interviewing in a range of health and social care settings.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

1.  Critically apply and evaluate current practice and research in motivational interviewing in specific settings.

2.  Critically discuss and apply core skills and knowledge in role and real play scenarios

3.  Critically analyse and reflect on motivational interviewing in practice through individual and peer supervision networks and skills based learning.

Indicative Content

1 Current practice and research in MI

Policy and health behaviour change, current MI research and MI in practice

2 Motivational Interviewing in context

Practice based examples including diet, smoking, substance use, medication

3 Adapted Motivational Interviewing (AMI)

Integrating MI in different clinical setting and with other approaches including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment

This course will be delivered utilising a blended learning approach offering a flexible learning opportunity for practitioners through a variety of student centred teaching methods. These include webinars, discussion forums and interactive learning activities through the online blackboard. The module encourages critical reflection, self-evaluation and self-awareness. It adopts an enquiry based, client / user centred approach to the study of this area of mental health care, with the use of case studies, scenarios and critical analysis of research papers as a medium for the development of knowledge and understanding. A library session will support the development skills for searching journals and using the Abertay Technologies. The teaching and learning strategy will draw upon prior experience and practice to encourage integration of theory into practice. This will include four study days which will be an introduction to the topic, skills based workshops for the development of the learning community, practice of skills in motivational interviewing and group work. Structured Feedback will take place in week 7. Reflection and analysis of individual progress will be supported through Blackboard by access to resources and the online forums. Students will be expected to spend time this week drafting an outline of their assignment for comments by the module leader and planning their study activity for the remaining 7 weeks.
