Description

This module explores leadership specifically in relation to health and socail care.

Aims

The overall aim of this module is to introduce students to the concept of leadership, leadership theories and styles and to enable the student practitioner to lead change and instigate team building.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

1.  Critically discuss theories, styles, principles and processes of leadership.

2.  Critically discuss processes of managing change, planned change theories and change strategies within ethical and legal boundaries whilst managing self, people and resources.

3.  Critically explore the concepts of teamwork and teambuilding strategies for interprofessional practices.

4.  Critically discuss and differentiate between leadership, management of change, mentorship, reflection, supervision and leadership in terms of stages of impact in managing change

5.  Critically discuss and reflect upon the key components of observed leadership and self as leader

Indicative Content

1 Principles and processes of leadership

Professional practice/ professionalism, including accountability and delegation. Risk Assessment and management, policy and leadership. Values and leadership

2 Management of Change

Leadership and managing change theories.Practice- development and its role in leadership. Key issues affecting health and social care. The evidence base for change. Service user involvement. Person-Centred Care

3 Team building

Team functioning, Team working, Interprofessional working. Role of clinical supervision and governance

4 Leadership and the practice concept

Leading outside of sphere of influence/inter professional inter sector working. Communicating judgements and decisions.Ethical and legal issues within leadership

5 Reflection

Self awareness, Personality assessment, Emotional Intelligence.Observing leadership, Critical analysis, making judgements and decisions.

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Teaching/knowledge creation/acquisition will be through blended learning, a combination of classroom and online activity, this will follow the ethos of independent inquiry, group discussion, online forums, working in small groups, scenario based work, development of presentations as well as the more traditional lectures and tutorials. Students will be expected to actively participate in case presentation discussions, reflection on practice, and experiential exercises. Such engagement can facilitate the development of a reflective and empathic practitioner. The virtual learning environment will be utilised to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and understanding. Experiential learning will form an important aspect of the student's learning and assessment.
