This module explores key professional issues for the registered nurse

Aims

The aim of the module is to prepare student nurses for professional accountability and responsibilities that accompany professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

1.  Demonstrate an enhanced understanding of the role, remit and responsibilities of the registered nurse

2.  Evaluate the scope of accountability in nursing including the requirement for keeping own knowledge and skills up to date

3.  Appraise decision making in nursing, applying the four moral principles

4.  Explore the role of the first level nurse in health promotion and quality improvement.

5.  Demonstrate an understanding of leadership, management team and multi-disciplinary work working. Management of change and development to improve and benefit patient care

6.  Explore ways to foster continuing professional development

Indicative Content

1 Legal and professional issues

The Code and registrant, registration and revalidation . Individual accountability and responsibility . Fitness to practice, Good health and good character. The NMC as professional regulator and protector of the public. Registration and revalidation

2 Performance and ethics

Managing interpersonal conflict with colleagues. Personal resilience. The use of supervision and appraisal to enhance patient care and safety and care. Dealing with complaints. Treating patients as individuals and maintaining clear professioanl boundaries.Raising and responding to concerns about poor practice. Whistleblowing and it's dilemmas

3 Decision making

The principle based approach as a framework to decision making. Complex dilemmas, the four moral principles revisited, legislation and the professional code of conduct. Autonomy and decision-making. Requirements for safe delegation of care. capacity; provision of care for people who lack decision-making capacity

4 Health promotion and quality improvement

The nurse as health promoter. Quality improvement, its placement in improving the care experience

5 Leadership, collaborative working and managing change

Leadership in the content of initial registration. Theories of leadership. Organisational aspects of care, team working; communication,collaboration and co-ordination,fostering multiagency working, roles and responsibilities. Management of change in teams and organisations, working with individulas and teams managing conflict and dealing with resistance to change. Setting standards and evaluating the quality of service.Preparing for contemporary changes in nursing.

6 Professional development

Identify own professional development needs through life long learning, responding to feedback, reflection. Flying start ECCF on practice. Recognising opportunities for interprofessional education in the practice setting. Keeping knowledge and skills up to date, utilising evidence based practice and clinical supervision.

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment

The module is delivered through a mixture of lecture , discussion group and online. it aims to provide students with an opportunity to explore the professional responsibilities of NMC registration. Discussion of key current issues is an important part of the learning experience in this module. Independent study will encourage self-determination and the development of learners to actively construct their own knowledge. T
