This module further prepares mental health nursing students for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council(NMC) through development of competence in the practice environment.
The aim of this module is to provide the student with the relevant preparation and practice experience to enable them to develop the skills and professional behaviours required to meet the second progression point criteria of the NMC Standards for pre-registration nursing education.
By the end of this module the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate the ability to practice safely with a decreasing level of supervision.
2. Demonstrate the ability to work in a person centred recovery focused way assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care.
3. Demonstrate values based nursing practice congruent with the 10 essential shared capabilities (10 ESCs) for mental health nursing.
4. Demonstrate the ability to identify own learning needs and strengths through reflective practice, developing and implementing plans to meet needs/build on strengths through a variety of learning
5. Demonstrate an understanding of mental health legislation, its principles and purpose, and practical application including consideration of patients rights.
1 Safe practice
Identifying deterioration in physical or mental health. Indications for antipsychotic , antidepressant, and mood stabilising medication. Medication used in the treatment of dementia, anxiety and drug dependence, common side effects of psychotropic medication; drug interactions; anaphylaxis; malignant neuroleptic syndrome.
2 Person centred recovery focussed care
Personalised care: assess, plan, implement and evaluate in collaboration with patient; joint goal setting with patient; inspire hope; risk assessment and positive risk taking; promoting physical health; evidence based individual and group psychosocial interventions; advance statements; assessment and maintenance of nutritional status; maintaining dignity; discharge planning and multidisciplinary practice.
3 Values based nursing
Support the development of independence: inspiring hope; promoting dignity; involving patients in decision making; self administration of medication.
4 Legal and ethical issues
Use of assessment and treatment sections of the Mental Health Act; tribunal system; compulsory treatment orders; independent advocacy; advance statements; administration of medication; consent; administration of medications in emergency situations without consent; protection of vulnerable adults; child protection legislation; the Medicines Act exemptions; patient group directions. Raising concerns about care.
5 Reflective practitioner
Models of reflection; supervision; group supervision; peer to peer supervision.
6 Clinical skills
Personal safety. Injection techniques, medication administration. Nurses role in ECT including recovery from anaesthesia; wound care, infection control and asceptic technique; basic life support; moving and handling. Removal of staples and sutures, catheterisation. Supplementary nutrition; SBAR
Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
The formal teaching component of the module takes place in the classroom and skills suite. The majority of learning, however, takes place in the practice learning environment in which the student learns through a mentoring relationship with qualified staff.

Credit Value – The total value of SCQF credits for the module. 20 credits are the equivalent of 10 ECTS credits. A full-time student should normally register for 60 SCQF credits per semester.
