This module is designed to help nursing students examine the notion of rights and how legislation seeks to protect and enable treatment for the most vulnerable groups in society.
The aim of this module is to further discuss and explore the nurse's roles and responsibilities in relation to the care and support of vulnerable people.
By the end of this module the student should be able to:
1. Describe legislation that promotes equality, diversity and social inclusion in relation to care provision.
2. Analyse nurses and other health and social care professionals' roles and responsibilities in the protection of vulnerable adults in society.
3. Identify key issues in relation to the legislation safeguarding children at risk of significant harm and examine the key principles that aim to promote child welfare and safety.
4. Consider the role of advocacy and advanced care planning and directives in the support of specific groups such as people with learning disabililty and people living with dementia.
5. Consider the ethical challenges facing nurses.

2 Protection of vulnerable adult groups
Identifying and protecting vulnerable groups older adults, people with Mental Health problems and learning disability. Adults with incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000, Protecting Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Gender based violence. Multi-agency working to prevent, identify, investigate and respond to concerns.
3 The nurse's role in safeguarding
Working with the Code in the context of safeguarding Child protection, identification and recognition of children who have been abused or who are at risk of abuse: or neglect, policy and procedure. Right to consent. Advocacy and advanced care planning
4 Ethical issues
Compulsory admission and consent to treatment. Key detention provisions of the legislation. Seclusion and restraint. ECT. Enhanced observation as an ethical issue

Credit Value – The total value of SCQF credits for the module. 20 credits are the equivalent of 10 ECTS credits. A full-time student should normally register for 60 SCQF credits per semester.
