The aim of this Module is to provide the student with the statistical; and management skills required to pursue a detailed investigation of a research topic.

Aims

The aim of this Module is to provide the student with a range of skills required to carry out research in a specified area appropriate to the programme of study.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

1.  Develop a research project proposal and plan

2.  Critically evaluate current knowledge within a specified field.

3.  Produce documentation of sufficient standard to satisfy university regulatory protocols with regards to risk assessment and ethical approval.

4.  Apply a knowledge of statistical analysis to the evaluation of data and the design of experimental protocols

Indicative Content

1 Research project management

The principles and practice of GLP and GMP, Research methods, The role of literature review in research. Research project management. Time management in the research context.

2 Research project development

Research project development. Research ethics. Research health and safety.

3 Experimental design & statistics

Producing an experimental design and plan for data analysis. Analysis of a data set relevant to the to the project.

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment

This module will be delivered via lectures and workshops. Workshops will include compulsory sessions such as health and safety and ethics as well as sessions which can be selected by the supervisor as having relevance to the project (such as focus group analysis and COSHH assessment). IN each subject area projects will be coordinated by a specific member of staff (Forensic project - Kevin Farrugia, Food Projects Athina Tziboula Clarke)
