This module will introduce students to common mental health conditions, and treatment approaches. It will enable students to engage with the perspectives of the service-user, professionals and broader society, and begin to encourage them to examine their own perspectives on mental health and wellbeing
The aim of this Module is to provide the student with a foundational understanding of the symptoms, experience and treatment of common mental health problems
By the end of this module the student should be able to:
1. Describe common mental health conditions and current treatment approaches
2. Conceptualise mental health, and the absence of mental health, and relate this to various approaches in counselling psychotherapy, psychology and psychiatry
3. Conceptualise the experience of mental health, and the absence of mental health within concepts of resiliance, stigma and from personal experience
4. Describe key issues in the provision of mental health care in community and hospital settings

To include NHS and voluntary sector provision for mental health care
2 Common mental health conditions, symptoms and treatment
Including depression, anxiety disorder, eating disorders, and chizophrenia
3 Differing perspectives on mental health
Examining the perspectives of professional, carers, society and individuals with mental health problems
4 Key issues in mental health care
Socio-economic factors, political influences on mental healthcare provision
Factors influencing recovery including treatment, concordance, stigma and resiliance
Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
This module will consist of weekly hour-long seminars, directed reading and tutorials/group-work building on the weekly topics. Critical reflection will be encouraged in discussion groups.

Credit Value – The total value of SCQF credits for the module. 20 credits are the equivalent of 10 ECTS credits. A full-time student should normally register for 60 SCQF credits per semester.
