Description

This module examines the principles of competitiveness and associated with it strategic decision-making undertaken by firms.

Aims

The aim of this Module is to provide the student with : a critical understanding of various business and competition centred management perspectives and an ability to develop effective interpretation, analysis and decision-making processes of firms of any size.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

1.  Determine and evaluate the significant economic and strategic drivers and in the increasingly integrated business environment within which management decision-making takes place;

2.  Evaluate strategic and tactical actions taken by firms to enter and compete in international markets;

3.  Critically assess the key concepts underpinning the competitiveness of a firm.

Indicative Content

1 Global Competitiveness and the Environment

A review of the competitive processes and environmental analysis. The evolution of firms, historical and contemporary debates. International market entry and the globalisation debate. Strategic re-structuring decisions such as Mergers and Acquisitions.

2 The macroeconomic environment

How the current global macroeconomic environment presents challenges for the local and global firms. Foreign direct investment drivers and decisions.

3 Global Competition for Resources

Examination of expansion of small and global firms into developing and developed countries. Corporate governance in diverse market.

4 Managing in the Global World

Promoting corporate entrepreneurship,knowledge transfer and innovation. Creating sustainable value.

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Class contact for this module comprises lectures and seminars. Lectures introduce and explore key concepts, theories and debates from a range of discipline perspectives. Lectures are of two parts: one hour lecture and one hour drop-in session to address student's questions. Seminars will engage students in enquiry-based activities, mostly based on case analysis, to encourage the development of deeper understanding of theory, context and practice links, and of the complementary contributions of different disciplines. In order to ensure a rather practical application of knowledge, business simulation will be utilised in tutorials. Students will often work in small groups/teams, deliver presentations, and undertake critical reflection. Enquiry based learning will make up a minimum of 60% of student class time.
