Contemporary Issues in Business


This module requires students to examine contemporary business and management issues in depth and to gain an understanding of current business & management thinking from both practical and theoretical perspectives. The purpose of the module is to develop and augment the knowledge and understanding of business & management research addressed in the core modules. It will consist of a series of self- contained lectures given by a range of staff from across the division, each highlighting a topical or emergent issue in management research.


The aim of this Module is to provide the student with : the opportunity to understand business and management theories and to develop and demonstrate their research skills in a business or management context.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

1.  Perform a focused literature search into the areas of business & management, identify and evaluate key developments at the frontiers in the field;

2.  Communicate an understanding of these developments in written form and demonstrate critical self-reflexive learning;

3.  Discuss and defend your own perspective on contemporary and pervasive business & management issues

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment

In the beginning of the term, the students will be given lectures on contemporary topics within business and management. Then the requirements for writing a report will be outlined and students will need to discuss and refine a research topic with the help of the module tutor. The rest of the module includes individual student work, under the tutor’s supervision, with students regularly presenting on their findings to date and their progress with their research. Assessment is via a report that includes an elaborate literature review on a contemporary issue in business and/or management (100%).

Guidance notes

Credit Value – The total value of SCQF credits for the module. 20 credits are the equivalent of 10 ECTS credits. A full-time student should normally register for 60 SCQF credits per semester.
